Ste. Marie is a village in Jasper County, Illinois, along the Embarras River. The population was 261 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Ste. Marie is located at (38.931480, -88.025205).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 261 people, 116 households, and 69 families residing in the village. The population density was 234.7 people per square mile (90.8/km²). There were 122 housing units at an average density of 109.7/sq mi (42.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.38% of the population.
   There were 116 households out of which 22.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 6.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.5% were non-families. 37.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 28.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.99.
   In the village the population was spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 29.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 74.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.6 males.
   The median income for a household in the village was $32,500, and the median income for a family was $37,344. Males had a median income of $24,375 versus $15,833 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,479. About 5.6% of families and 6.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under the age of eighteen and 15.4% of those sixty five or over.
   The world famous Hi-Bender Saloon (aka The Knee Bender) is located in Ste. Marie, IL. Other places of interest are The Hideout and the American Legion Hall. Recently, Ste. Marie had a new gas station (named The Gas Station) built in town. The current mayor of Ste. Marie is Bill Hartrich.
